Meet Sonya

My love of horses began at the age of five, riding dressage here in Rancho Santa Fe. Over the years that followed, I developed a diverse skill set through my exposure to various disciplines in various regions throughout the US, Guatemala, Mexico and France.

My first horse at nine years old was a young, very green quarter horse with an unknown origin, she introduced me to natural horsemanship as I worked to address some of the challenges that came with a young rider attempting to train a young horse with unknown baggage. For the next decade I owned her, I explored numerous training techniques, enriching my understanding of equestrian practices.

At the age of 15, I acquired another horse that was ‘untouchable’ and decided to peruse Three-day Eventing with her. I had the privilege of working with the late Frances O’Reilly, where I assisted her in starting young horses and OTTB’s, producing them for Three-day Eventing and transforming them into solid riding partners for amature riders. Becoming her assistant trainer, I continued to work with Fran for the next 15 years as well as exploring working at a top Three-day eventing barn, an Arabian breeding farm and as a rider for a private owner selling horses.

Most recently, I spent three and a half years in Wyoming learning from top colt starter and problem horse fixer, José Alejos, spending the summers outfitting, teaching lessons, barrel racing at the Jackson Hole Rodeo and the winters working problem horses and further developing my biomechanical skills in the saddle.

Throughout my career, I’ve received regular training from international professionals, José Alejos, Henrik Johansen of Positive Riding, Pedro Louceiro, Leslie Law, Linda Allen, and Lucinda Green to name a few. I am committed to continuous education, regularly enhancing my knowledge through clinics, veterinary technician training, BTMM (Balance through movement method) training, and PEMF therapy.

In late 2024 I decided to pursue competing in the dressage arena and successfully acquired my USDF Bronze medal aboard my retired OTTB upper level Three-day eventing horse, Benny.  I’m currently working on building trust and relationship on a new horse, Eddie, to pursue my USDF Silver and Gold medals as well as developing three lovely young horses for the competition ring.

In 2025 Wild Rose Equestrian began basing at the lovely Rancho Cielo in Rancho Santa Fe, California. One of the last remaining communities with trail access all around, it’s the ideal ranch for all kinds of experiences and training aids for all horses and riders. I also continue to travel regularly around the US and internationally teaching clinics and lessons to passionate students.

With a wealth of experience across various disciplines, I am passionate about fostering the connection between horse and rider while promoting confidence and competence in every rider I instruct.
